Visual Storytelling
This project addresses the communication barriers faced by children with physical disabilities - a deeply sensitive subject drawn from the author’s own life. The objective was to elevate the publication far beyond the clinical, sterile aesthetic of typical academic books. We sought to honor the narrative by treating it with the dignity, warmth, and artistic care it deserves.
We crafted a design language rooted in minimalism, emotion, and symbolism. At the core of the cover is a collaborative piece of artwork created by the author’s daughter, serving as the emotional anchor of the project. We paired this expressive painting with a carefully selected soft-serif typeface - its close, merging letterforms visually echoing the barriers and breakthroughs explored in the text. Embraced by a warm red palette, the design reflects the passion, struggle, and deep bond between mother and daughter, translating complex emotions into a highly calibrated visual layout.
This project exemplifies empathy-led design as a form of advocacy within the physical field. By bridging the gap between art and academia, the book emerges as a soft-spoken yet unforgettable physical object. It represents a core belief at Konno: that design has the power to give visual voice to underrepresented stories, translating profound human emotion into tangible, meaningful realities.
